A funny optical illusion? Do you see mustache everywhere? It's normal. It's the Movember effect - the month of November dedicated to men's health. The famous mustache is here to raise awareness about male cancers, mental health, and suicide prevention among men. The causes to which Joe Snyder Europe is 100% committed!
How did Movember start
No one could tell the origins of the Movember movement better than its founder - Adam Garone. In 2011 he was invited to participate in the TED conference (Ideas Worth Spreading) to retrace with passion and humor the journey of his organization. The theme was: "Healthier men, one mustache at a time".
Movember started in Australia in 2003. Contrary to what one might think, it did not all start with the cause of men's health. It started with the mustache. 30 friends have taken on the challenge of bringing the famous 70s mustache back to life. For 30 days of November and starting with the clean-shaven faces, they had to grow beautiful facial hair above their upper lip. The experience ended with a big party with prizes awarded for the best and worst mustache.
It was only a year later that the idea of associating the mustache challenge with men's health came to life. The tagline “Changing the Face of Men's Health” was born. The message was simple but powerful: By changing the appearance for 30 days, getting men engaged in their health and the health risks they faced.
Let's talk about men's health
Men die too young. On average and worldwide, men die 6 years earlier than women. Mental illnesses affect men more frequently than women, with 75% of all suicides committed by men. One man dies by suicide every minute of every day… Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men ...
We do not talk enough about these problems. Hence the urgent need for global awareness of men's health issues. The Movember movement focuses on 3 main axes:
- Help men and boys to stay mentally healthy – by building strong social connections, encouraging them to stay in touch with friends, family, and colleagues, discuss their health and important moments in their life
- Fighting against prostate cancer - by funding the research to collaborate and increase global knowledge about this disease, by helping men to recognize the symptoms and risk factors, by providing affordable treatments, and reducing the side effects for men and their families
- Fight against testicular cancer - by organizing information campaigns on risk factors and the importance of self-screening and by helping men from early detection through to diagnosis, treatment, and support
But the best thing about Movember is that you can talk about all these serious topics in a relaxed, no-holds-barred way, have fun and together help change the face of men's health.

Mo Bros & Sistas
Why Mo? Because it’s the Australian slang word for mustache. Hence the Mo Bros (brothers) and the Mo Sistas (sisters) - the adherents of the movement. And yes, women are also invited, even if their challenge is not about the mustache (thank God!). All participants are invited to register on the organization’s official website movember.com and then to choose their way of contributing to the cause.
And there is a lot of ideas to choose from:
- Grow a mustache of course
- Spread the idea of Movember - reach as many people as possible and raise awareness
- Move for Movember - Run or walk 60 miles over the month for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every day across the world.
- Host a Mo-ment event
All donations collected during Movember month help fund a Global Plan of Action. It brings together 1,200 programs in 21 countries, focused on 4 main themes. And the goals are ambitious:
- Reduce premature mortality among men by 25%
- Reduce the suicide rate among men by 25%
- Halve the number of deaths due to prostate and testicular cancer
So don't wait any longer and join Movember now at movember.com
We’re all concerned!
